Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick
Hailing from the eminent Darbhanga Gharana with a rich musical lineage dating back to the 18th century, Pandit Prem Kumar Mallick personifies the profound Dhrupad tradition. Born in 1960 and representing the 12th generation of this illustrious family, he began his journey under the expert tutelage of his father, the renowned Dhrupad maestro, late Pt. Vidur Mallick and his grandfather, the celebrated Dhrupad singer, Lt. Pt. Sukhdev Mallick.
Pt. Mallick's performances stand out for their distinctive repertory, employing Khandarwani and Gauharwani styles and a diverse range of Layakaries & Tihayees. The brilliance of his Alapa, the continuity of rhythm combined with poetry, and his impeccable manner of presenting ragas are a testament to his rigorous training and innate talent.
His achievements are manifold. At just 19, he clinched a Gold Medal at the All India Radio music competition and further showcased his mastery with another Gold Medal in Sangeet Praveen in 1985. Pt. Mallick's contributions have been widely recognized, as evidenced by honours such as the 'Tulsi Award', 'Dhrupad Vibhushan', and 'Dhrupad Mani' awards. He earned a Ph.D. in Classical Vocal Music from Allahabad University.
Graded as a 'TOP' Dhrupad Vocal artist, the zenith ranking by All India Radio & TV, he is also an esteemed 'A' Grade artist in Hindustani Classical Vocal. His vast experience has found him associated with premier institutions for Dhrupad teaching, and he has showcased his craft at major festivals across the globe - from North America to Europe and Asia.
The global recognition of Pt. Mallick extends to recordings by renowned international radios such as Radio Bremen, BBC London, and Hungarian Radio Budapest. His ties with institutions like the Northern American Dhrupad Association and his tenure as an artist-in-residence in Berlin further underscore his international stature.
